In SUDAN, a drone strike in North Darfur killed at least 32 civilians, including 12 children. A report brought evidence of Ethiopian support for the RSF, including equipment delivery at the Asosa base. In NIGERIA, jihadist attacks killed police officers and a volunteer while burning houses. ISWAP militants executed 27 and kidnapped 18 near Mafa. Mahmuda jihadist group killed over 40 and burned churches in Kebbi. Armed men killed 50 in Shiroro. In GAMBIA, a British lawyer was appointed as special prosecutor to investigate atrocities, including executions and rapes, during the Yahya Jammeh era. In ETHIOPIA, police dismantled an international human trafficking ring holding over 3,000 captives in Libya. The federal government extended the mandate of the Tigray administration, delaying elections. In the DRC, the UN reported that 25 aid workers were killed over the last 3 years. The Central Bank announced a ban on all foreign currency to combat terrorism financing.
In LEBANON, massive Israeli strikes killed 483 people, including 303 in a single day, and injured more than a thousand. Many civilians were among the casualties. The Hezbollah bombed the Manara zone in Israel in response. The Lebanese government submitted a complaint to the UN regarding Israeli aggression. Separate Israeli attacks injured 3 UN peacekeepers and destroyed their surveillance devices. In SYRIA, a young man was killed by Israeli tank in Quneitra. In PALESTINE, an Israeli strike killed 4 civilians in Gaza City. Al Jazeera denounced the targeted killing of one of its journalists by a drone in Gaza. Clashes between an anti-Hamas militia and Hamas in Gaza resulted in 10 deaths. In the West Bank, Israeli police arrested settlers for attacking Qusra and assaulting a resident. An off-duty Israeli soldier shot to death a Palestinian. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired his chief of staff following controversies. The corruption trial of Prime Minister Netanyahu resumed as his government approved 34 new settlements. Israel excluded Spain from the international mechanism monitoring the Gaza truce.
Regarding the IRAN-GULF-ISRAEL-US war, the WHO warned of attacks on Iranian medical facilities. Iranian forces launched missiles at Israel, while the Iranian judiciary executed several individuals for alleged sabotage or protest-related actions. Israeli-US strikes on Iranian petrochemical zones killed 5. Iranian missiles also targeted Kuwait and the UAE, while the US issued an ultimatum regarding the reopening of Hormuz. Several foreign citizens were released from Iranian prison. American President Donald Trump threatened the total annihilation of Iran via social media. Former Iranian Minister Kamal Kharazi died from strike wounds. Peace negotiations opened in Islamabad.
In EASTERN EUROPE, Russian attacks killed 34 in Ukraine, and Ukrainian attacks killed 5 civilians in Russia. Ukraine proposed an energy truce to Russia through American mediators. Russia confirmed the deaths of 16 Cameroonian contract fighters serving in its ranks. A court in St. Petersburg sentenced 6 anti-war activists to prison terms of up to 12 years. A temporary ceasefire for Orthodox Easter was announced. Russian security forces raided the offices of Novaya Gazeta, and the NGO Memorial was declared an extremist organization. A former journalist was arrested for treason in Chita for allegedly assisting Ukraine. In Serbia, the UN expressed concern over political violence and the shrinking of civic space following elections.
In MYANMAR, an investigation revealed that a Czech company delivered aircraft to the military junta despite sanctions. A Rohingya activist filed a genocide complaint in Indonesia against the junta chief under universal jurisdiction. In INDIA, interethnic clashes between Meitei and Kuki groups in Manipur resulted in at least 4 deaths.
In VENEZUELA, the interim government announced monitoring of an amnesty law while hundreds of political prisoners remain detained.
Regarding international justice/relations, shipping companies from GREECE were accused of facilitating oil transport to Israel, violating a trade embargo. In AUSTRALIA, a former soldier was arrested for war crimes committed in Afghanistan. The UN reported a record 326 humanitarian workers killed globally in 2025. In FRANCE, a former Hutu officer was sent to trial for complicity in the Rwandan genocide, and the company Lafarge faced a verdict for financing armed groups in Syria. President Trump criticized NATO allies for their lack of support in Iran. In MALI, the government withdrew recognition of the Sahrawi Republic in favor of Morocco’s plan.

SUDAN
DRONE STRIKE ON WEDDING KILLS DOZENS IN DARFUR
On April 8, 2026, at least 32 civilians including 12 children were killed during a drone strike in Koutoum, North Darfur. The attack occurred at 22:00 when a drone hit twice a house hosting a wedding ceremony and completely destroyed the building. A medical source reported that 12 bodies were brought to Koutoum hospital and 16 people received treatment for injuries. The El-Fasher Resistance Committee attributed the strike on the Al-Salama neighborhood near a girls’ school to the Sudanese army. RSF officials condemned the attack and claimed a higher toll of 56 deaths including 17 children. Doctor without Borders (Médecins sans frontières) Darfur coordinator Muriel Boursier described numerous and serious injuries from drone strikes in the region.
YALE REPORT REVEALS ETHIOPIAN MILITARY SUPPORT FOR RSF
On April 9, 2026, the Yale Humanitarian Research Lab report documented evidence of Ethiopian military assistance to the RSF from the Asosa base. Satellite imagery and open source data from late December 2025 to late March 2026 showed carriers unloading « technicals » pick-up trucks from the Ethiopian army. These vehicles were observed resupplying RSF units in Blue Nile State and in clashes around the strategic border town of Al-Kurmuk. The Yale report noted expanded logistics at Asosa including fuel tanks, shipping containers and tents for 150 people along with a new hangar and concrete pad at the airport. The Sudanese army previously accused Ethiopia of launching drone strikes from its territory. Addis Ababa continues to deny hosting paramilitary camps near the border.
NIGERIA
CIVILIANS & SECURITY FORCES TARGETED IN JIHADIST RAIDS
On April 4, 2026, suspected Boko Haram or ISWAP terrorists killed 4 police officers during an attack on the Nganzai divisional headquarters. A police spokesperson stated the 01:00 attack aimed to take control of the town located near Maiduguri. Simultaneously, jihadists targeted a security post at a displaced persons camp in Damasak near the Niger border. The attackers killed 1 member of the local security volunteers and burned approximately 20 houses. Police and civilian volunteers repelled both groups of assailants. In the previous days, ISWAP jihadists also attacked Kautikeri village near Chibok and killed 11 people while burning houses. Manasseh Allen, president of the Chibok Area Development Association, stated the armed men withdrew to Sambisa forest. ISWAP fighters surrounded woodcutters outside Mafa and killed 27 people while kidnapping 18 others. Anti-jihadist militia members Babakura Kolo and Ibrahim Liman confirmed the victims were from Mafa, which is 60 kilometers from Maiduguri. Amnesty International reported that 20 displaced persons were killed and 30 kidnapped during the forest raid.
JIHADIST RAID CAMPAIGN IN KEBBI STATE
On April 5, 2026, the Mahmuda jihadist group began deadly raids against at least 8 villages in Kebbi State. Residents and police identified the attackers as members of a local group affiliated with Mahmud al-Nigeri of Ansaru, which is linked to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. The assailants killed over 40 people, including Christians and Muslims indiscriminately. Assailants also burned churches, houses and granaries while targeting livestock. Over 500 people fled to schools and churches in Yauri to escape the 3 day long violence.
DEATH TOLL RISES IN SHIRORO BANDIT ATTACK
On April 7, 2026, a large group of armed bandits on motorcycles attacked Erena village in the Shiroro district of Niger State, killing 50 people. Humanitarian reports confirmed the discovery of 50 bodies, including 34 hunters working with the government, 14 self-defense militia members and 2 civilians. The agricultural region of Shiroro, home to Nigeria’s third largest hydroelectric plant, has become a bastion for armed groups. These groups frequently target villages near gold, copper and lithium deposits to force residents out and seize resources. Bandits operate from camps in forests spanning Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi and Niger states. President Bola Tinubu recently ordered military reinforcements to address the double threat of jihadist violence and mass kidnappings by gangs, though violence persists throughout the northwest and west.
GAMBIA
GAMBIAN SPECIAL PROSECUTOR APPOINTED FOR DICTATORSHIP CRIMES
On April 8, 2026, the Gambian Ministry of Justice appointed British lawyer Martin Hackett as special prosecutor to investigate crimes committed during the era of former dictator Yahya Jammeh. This appointment follows recommendations from the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission to prosecute 70 people for atrocities occurring between 1994 and 2017. These crimes include the execution of at least 240 people by State agents, forced disappearances, rapes, torture and the administration of a fake AIDS treatment. Martin Hackett has a 4 year renewable mandate and previously worked on genocide cases for the United Nations. Former dictator Yahya Jammeh went into exile in january 2017 after losing the december 2016 election to President Adama Barrow. Justice Minister Dawda Jallow stated Martin Hackett will present annual reports to the president, the National Assembly and ECOWAS.
ETHIOPIA-ERITREA
INTERNATIONAL HUMAN TRAFFICKING RING DISMANTLED
On April 8, 2026, Ethiopian police announced the arrest of an international human trafficker and 9 accomplices for holding over 3,000 people captive in Libya. Authorities have investigated the network since 2018 for luring young people from Ethiopia, Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, Kenya and Somalia to warehouses in Libya where they were held as hostages. The traffickers demanded large sums of money from families while victims were beaten, whipped with cables and burned with molten plastic. Police reported that the gang killed over 100 victims and raped over 50 women. The investigation identified 70 other significant traffickers in Ethiopia and other countries with support from the European Union funded ROCK Project. Federal police published photos of 7 men and 3 women arrested during the operation. Testimony from over 100 relatives in Ethiopia, Canada and several European countries helped dismantle the group.
TIGRAY INTERIM ADMINISTRATION MANDATE EXTENDED
On April 8, 2026, the Ethiopian federal government extended the mandate of the Tigray interim administrator for 1 year. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the extension for General Tadesse Werede effective April 9, 2026. This decision raises questions about regional elections scheduled for June 1 because Tigray has lacked representation in the federal parliament since 2021. General Tadesse Werede previously replaced Getachew Reda who now serves as an advisor to the Prime Minister. Tensions persist between federal troops and Tigrayan forces along the border while the TPLF demands the return of 1 million displaced persons before holding any vote. Federal authorities recently accused the TPLF of establishing closer ties with Eritrea.
DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO
DANGEROUS DECLINE IN HUMANITARIAN SAFETY
On April 8, 2026, UN humanitarian operations chief Tom Fletcher announced that 25 aid workers were killed in the Democratic Republic of Congo over the last 3 years. Speaking at a Security Council meeting regarding the protection of civilians, Tom Fletcher reported a total of 326 humanitarian deaths worldwide in 2025 and over 1,010 since 2023. He identified the DRC as one of the most dangerous locations alongside Gaza, the West Bank, Sudan and South Sudan.
CENTRAL BANK BANS CASH DOLLAR TRANSACTIONS
On April 9, 2026, Central Bank of Congo Governor André Wameso announced that all cash transactions in foreign currencies will be prohibited by April 9, 2027. According to a communique signed by André Wameso, such transactions will only be permitted through scriptural bank operations. The CBC also banned commercial banks from importing physical foreign currency notes because the central bank will assume exclusive import rights. This policy aims to secure supplies while fighting money laundering and terrorism financing. Congolese economist and majority party deputy Godé Mpoy criticized the move as « economicide » given the nation’s low banking coverage. The US dollar has dominated the local economy since the 1990s when inflation hit 2,000 percent under President Mobutu Sese Seko.
LEBANON
DEADLY BOMBINGS, BRIDGES DESTROYED & UN PEACEKEEPERS INJURED
On April 3, 2026, Israeli air strikes destroyed the bridge linking Sohmor to Machghara over the Litani river to prevent Hezbollah weapon transfers. 3 members of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon were injured in an explosion in the south. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that 2 people died and 15 were injured in a strike near a Sohmor mosque after Friday prayers. In Beirut, Israeli aircraft struck « terrorist infrastructures » in the southern suburbs
CHILDREN KILLED, TYR SHELLED
On April 3, 2026, Israeli strikes in Habbouche near Nabatiyeh killed 2 little girls and wounded 22 people. A separate strike in Maaraka near Tyr killed 5 people. In Tyr, Israeli forces targeted 3 buildings after an evacuation order, leading to the collapse of an 11 story structure. Approximately 20,000 residents and displaced persons remain in Tyr. Hospital director Youssef Jaafar stated the Italo-Lebanese hospital would remain open despite damage from nearby strikes that injured 18 people including 3 rescuers. A mosque in Baraachit was also destroyed. The Israeli army announced the death of a soldier in combat in southern Lebanon during the ground invasion. At this point, the overall death toll in Lebanon reached 1,422.
ISRAELI TROOPS DESTROY UNITED NATIONS SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS, BOMB ON BEIRUT
On April 4, 2026, Israeli forces used lasers to destroy 17 surveillance cameras at the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon headquarters in Naqoura. UNFIL spokesperson Kandice Ardiel reported that Israeli soldiers also carried out massive demolitions of houses and shops in Naqoura, damaging the UN headquarters. Strikes also hit a tourist boat and fishing vessels in the Tyr port. On On the same day, at least 2 powerful explosions hit the southern suburbs of Beirut at dawn. Simultaneously, the Israeli army announced on social media the start of strikes targeting “Hezbollah infrastructures” in the capital.
FAMILY KILLED IN ISRAELI STRIKE
On April 5, 2026, an Israeli air strike killed 7 people including 6 members of the same family in Kfar Hatta. The victims, who included a 4 year old girl, were displaced persons waiting for a relative to evacuate them. The relative was also killed upon arrival. In Toul, another strike killed a couple and injured their 2 children.
DEADLY STRIKES NEAR MAJOR BEIRUT HOSPITAL, PEACEKEEPERS WARN OF POTENTIAL RESPONSES
On April 5, 2026, an Israeli strike near the Rafic Hariri hospital in Beirut killed 5 people and injured 52. Victims included 2 Sudanese migrants and a 15 year old girl. Hospital deputy director Zakaria Tawbé reported panic among patients and damage to the facility. A strike on an apartment building killed 3 people including Pierre Mouawad, a local official of the Christian party Lebanese Forces and 2 women. On the same day, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNFIL) expressed extreme concern regarding attacks near its positions. UNFIL stated that such fire could lead to military responses from them and urged all parties to lay down their weapons. The mission called for serious work toward a ceasefire to ensure the safety of peacekeepers and civilians in the conflict zone.

On April 6, 2026, Israeli forces launched a strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut after ordering the evacuation of 7 neighborhoods.
ISRAELI ARMY ACHIEVES ADVANCED LINE IN LEBANON
On April 7, 2026, the Israeli army announced it finished deploying ground troops to an « advanced defense line » in southern Lebanon. Lebanese military sources reported Israeli progression on 3 axes between 5 and 9 kilometers deep. Israeli Defense Minister Israël Katz said the objective is to establish a « security zone ». Israeli forces currently control the strategic town of Khiam and high ground overlooking Bayada. Israël Katz previously stated that houses in border villages would be demolished and that the army would remain in part of the south after the war. The Lebanese army has withdrawn from invaded zones to avoid direct confrontation.
TOTAL DEATH TOLL EXCEEDS 1500
On April 7, 2026, the Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that Israeli strikes have killed 1,530 people since march 2. This figure includes 102 women, 130 children and 57 medical personnel. Additionally, 4,812 people have been injured during the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, and 1 million have been forced into exodus.
CIVILIANS KILLED ON SAÏDA WATERFRONT
On April 8, 2026, an Israeli air strike on the waterfront of Saïda killed 8 civilians and injured 22 others. The strike occurred shortly before Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a 2 week regional ceasefire between the USA and Iran. However, Israeli and American officials later clarified that the truce does not include Lebanon.
UNPRECEDENTED ISRAELI SHELLING HITS HEART OF BEIRUT
On April 8, 2026, Israeli forces launched their most massive coordinated strike since the war began, hitting 100 sites across Lebanon in 10 minutes. The bombing killed at least 303 people and injured over 1,150. Witnesses described scenes of panic, children with amputated limbs and charred vehicles on Mazraa corniche. Defense Minister Israël Katz congratulated the army for the operation which he called the hardest hit since the 2024 pager explosions. US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the regional truce excludes Lebanon. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot was present in the Belgian embassy when Israeli missiles struck neighborhoods just 100 meters away. He denounced the strikes as the most massive since hostilites began on February 28 and stated that « Beirut cannot become a new Gaza ». Prévot criticized the systematic destruction of infrastructure as creating a de facto buffer zone threatening Lebanese sovereignty.
VITAL BORDER CROSSING TO SYRIA REOPENS AMID THREATS
On April 8, 2026, the Masnaa border crossing between Lebanon and Syria reopened after being closed and evacuated due to Israeli threats. Israel accused Hezbollah of using the passage for military equipment transfers.
ITALIAN PEACEKEEPERS SHOT AT BY ISRAELI FORCES
On April 8, 2026, Israeli forces fired warning shots at an Italian convoy of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon traveling from Shama to Beirut. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto called the incident « unacceptable » noting that one vehicle was damaged although no injuries occurred. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani demanded immediate clarification from the Israeli ambassador. Italy has the 2nd largest contingent in the UNFIL with 754 soldiers.
SEARCH FOR VICTIMS UNDER RUBBLE AS DEATH TOLL CLIMBS
On April 9, 2026, rescuers in Beirut continued searching for bodies following the deadliest Israeli strikes of the war which killed at least 303 people and wounded 1,150. Lebanon observed a day of mourning while strikes continued in the south killing 5 people in Abassiyé. Hezbollah announced it bombarded northern Israel in response to « ceasefire violations ». The ICRC and NGOs expressed indignation over the level of destruction. Iran insisted a Lebanese ceasefire is a condition of the peace plan.
LEBANESE GOVERNMENT BANS NON-STATE WEAPONS IN BEIRUT
On April 9, 2026, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announced that weapons of non-state groups are prohibited in Beirut, targeting Hezbollah’s arsenal. Cabinet spokesperson Paul Morcos noted that the 2 officials representing Hezbollah opposed the decision. The government also decided to submit an urgent complaint to the UN Security Council regarding Israeli aggression. Simultaneously the Israeli army issued a new evacuation order for southern Beirut neighborhoods including the road to the country’s only airport. Colonel Avichay Adraee warned that strikes would continue. The NBN television station suspended its programs as its offices were located in the evacuation zone. Indonesian Ambassador Umar Hadi, representing over 60 countries, condemned « persistent attacks » against the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. The statement cited the deaths of 3 Indonesian peacekeepers and injuries to others from France, Ghana, Nepal and Poland. Participating nations called for a rapid and transparent UN investigation into the responsible parties. The cumulative toll since march 2 has reached 1,888 deaths and 6,092 injuries.
HEZBOLLAH TARGETS ISRAEL
On April 9, 2026, Hezbollah launched a barrage of rockets at the Manara zone in Israel at 02:30 local time. The group claimed this action was a response to Israeli violations of the regional ceasefire.
ISRAELI STRIKES KILL STATE SECURITY MEMBERS IN SOUTH
On April 10, 2026, violent Israeli air strikes in Nabatiyé killed at least 8 members of the Lebanese State Security forces. An ANI press report stated the aircrafts targeted an administrative complex causing a major fire. The Israeli army reported that Hezbollah fired approximately 30 projectiles into northern Israel. Israel claims to have dismantled 4,300 Hezbollah infrastructures and eliminated 1,400 fighters since march 2.
SYRIA
SYRIAN MAN KILLED BY ISRAELI TANK FIRE
On April 3, 2026, 1 young Syrian man was killed by Israeli tank fire in the border province of Quneitra in southern Syria. According to the official Sana agency and state television, the victim was in a vehicle targeted near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Sana previously reported that Israeli forces closed multiple roads leading to new military positions, which limited the movement of local farmers and residents. A temporary checkpoint was also established in a village. Following the December 2024 fall of Former Syrian President Bachar al-Assad, Israel sent troops into the country. Israel has since conducted hundreds of strikes and incursions while demanding a demilitarized zone in southern Syria. In march, the Israeli army bombed military camps in Soueïda province in retaliation for attacks on the Druze community.
PALESTINE
4 PALESTINIANS KILLED BY ISRAELI DRONE
On April 5, 2026, 4 Palestinians were killed and 5 others were wounded by an Israeli drone strike in eastern Gaza City. The Gaza Civil Defense and Al-Shifa Hospital confirmed that victims were transferred to medical facilities after an Israeli drone fired 2 projectiles on a group of civilians. The Israeli military claimed it identified a terrorist cell representing an immediate threat and conducted a targeted strike to lift the danger. This incident occurred despite the ceasefire.
8 ISRAELIS ARRESTED FOR WEST BANK ATTACK
On April 5, 2026, Israeli police arrested 8 Israelis suspected of attacking the Palestinian village of Qusra in the occupied West Bank. The suspects, aged 18 to 48, allegedly set fire to houses and assaulted a 32 year old Palestinian man who suffered serious head injuries. Police seized an M-16 assault rifle. According to the Palestinian agency Wafa, the attackers were settlers acting under the protection of Israeli forces who also fired on poultries at a farm. This attack follows a peak in settler violence. Over 500,000 Israelis live in West Bank settlements which are illegal under international law.
NETANYAHU DISMISSES CHIEF OF STAFF AFTER SCANDALS
On April 6, 2026, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired his chief of staff Ziv Agmon following a series of controversies. Ziv Agmon faced backlash for making racist remarks describing Jews of Moroccan origin as baboons and for criticizing the wife and son of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He is replaced by lawyer and economist Ido Norden who must pass a security investigation before working in the office. Additionally, Israeli police recently questioned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confidant Tzachi Braverman regarding leaked classified information.
10 KILLED DURING CLASHES IN CENTRAL GAZA
On April 6, 2026, 10 people were killed and dozens were wounded during clashes and Israeli strikes near the Al-Maghazi camp. Witnesses reported that violence erupted between an anti-Hamas militia, presumably supported by Israel, and Hamas security forces near a school housing displaced persons. The militiamen were attempting to conduct arrests when residents and Hamas members resisted. Shortly after the confrontation, Israeli forces bombed the area near the school. The Martyrs of Al-Aqsa Hospital and the Gaza Civil Defense verified the death toll. The Israeli military stated it is examining the reports.
WHO SUSPENDS MEDICAL EVACUATIONS AFTER FATAL INCIDENT
On April 06, 2026, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus suspended medical evacuations from Gaza to Egypt. The decision followed a security incident of unspecified origin, that killed 1 person providing services to the organization. 2 World Health Organization staff members were present during the event. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called for the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers while authorities investigate the circumstances. Evacuations via the Rafah crossing remain halted until further notice. Both Israel and the movement Hamas continue to accuse each other of violating the fragile ceasefire. Although journalist cannot enter Gaza to make independent verifications about the victims, the United Nations considers ministry casualty figures to be reliable.
AL JAZEERA DENOUNCES TARGETED KILLING OF JOURNALIST
On April 08, 2026, Al Jazeera condemned the death of journalist Mohammed Wishah who was killed by an Israeli drone strike in Gaza. The press network described the strike on his vehicle in western Gaza as a deliberate and targeted crime designed to intimidate the press. Al Jazeera stated it holds the Israeli occupation forces entirely responsible. The media announced it would engage legal action to achieve justice for its personnel. Speaking to the Security Council, he noted that over 1,010 humanitarians died in the last 3 years. Most deaths occurred in Gaza and the West Bank with 560 victims followed by 130 in Sudan, 60 in South Sudan and 25 each in Ukraine and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
RWANDAN EX-OFFICER TO FACE GENOCIDE TRIAL IN PARIS
On April 8, 2026, the Paris court of appeal sent former Hutu Lieutenant-Colonel Cyprien Kayumba to the special assize court for complicity in genocide. The 71-year-old was the financial director of the Rwandan Defense Ministry in 1994. He is suspected of organizing arms deliveries used to kill Tutsi and moderate Hutu during the conflict which caused 800,000 deaths. Cyprien Kayumba claimed he was executing orders and was unaware of the massacres. On April 19, 1994, he was sent to France to execute armament contracts.
TRUMP CRITICIZES NATO ALLIES
On April 8, 2026, American President Donald Trump met NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House amid tensions over the war in Iran. White House Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated NATO members failed by turning their backs on the United States. Trump threatened to leave the alliance. Conversely, Mark Rutte told CNN that a large majority of European countries fulfilled their promises. Rutte also met Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss military operations against Iran and the war in Ukraine.
FRENCH COURT TO RULE ON LAFARGE FINANCING OF ARMED GROUPS
On April 10, 2026, the Paris correctional court prepared to deliver its verdict against cement company Lafarge and 8 former executives for financing terrorism. The company is accused of paying 4.7 million euros to groups like the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nosra in 2013 and 2014 through its intermediary Firas Tlass. These payments aimed to maintain operations at the Jalabiya plant. Former Deputy Director General Christian Herrault argued they had to choose the “least bad” solution for their 1,000 employees. Prosecutors requested a 1.125 million euro fine and the confiscation of 30 million euros in assets. They also requested 6 years of prison for former CEO Bruno Lafont.
MALI ENDS RECOGNITION OF SAHRAWI REPUBLIC
On April 10, 2026, Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop announced support for the Moroccan “autonomy plan” for Western Sahara during a meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. Diop stated the plan is the only serious and credible basis for conflict resolution. Consequently, Mali withdrew its recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. This decision follows a degradation of diplomatic relations with Algeria which supports the Polisario Front. Western Sahara is considered a non-autonomous territory by the United Nations. In October, the UN Security Council passed a resolution presented by the United States describing the Moroccan plan as the most feasible solution.
