SUDAN

RSF DRONE STRIKE KILLS 5 CIVILIANS

On May 02, 2026, a drone strike conducted by the Rapid Support Forces hit a civilian vehicle in south Omdurman and killed all 5 people on board. According to the independent group Emergency Lawyers, this was the second strike in the region within days. While Khartoum has experienced relative calm since March 2025, over 1.8 million displaced persons have returned to find infrastructure in ruins.

9 FAMILY MEMBERS OF COMMANDER KILLED

On May 03, 2026, military sources reported that a drone attack killed 9 relatives of a commander allied with the State’s army. The strike occurred at approximately 22:00 on May 2 and targeted the family home of Sudan Shield Forces Commander Abou Aqla Kaykal in Al Kaheli village. Victims included 2 brothers of the commander, 6 children and Sudan Shield Forces Officer Siddiq Bakhit. Although neither side issued an official statement, sources suggested the attack was committed by the Rapid Support Forces. Abou Aqla Kaykal is a former Rapid Support Forces commander who defected to the army in October 2024 to help reclaim areas like Al Jazirah and Khartoum.

KHARTOUM AIRPORT TARGETED BY DRONES

On May 04, 2026, a military source stated that drones targeted Khartoum airport and were shot down by air defenses. Witnesses in the Al Safa district east of the airport confirmed hearing explosions and seeing smoke. Since the war began in April 2023, both the regular army and paramilitary forces have increased drone usage, resulting in numerous fatalities. Conflict remains intense across the country.

DIPLOMATIC RIFT OVER DRONE ATTACKS

On May 05, 2026, Ethiopia accused the Sudanese army of financing the TPLF armed group, as verbal tensions escalated following drone strikes. Khartoum recalled its ambassador after accusing Addis Ababa and the United Arab Emirates of involvement in a May 4 drone attack on Khartoum airport. Sudanese Army Spokesperson Assim Awad claimed drones were launched in March from Bahir Dar airport, Ethiopia, to target Sudanese army positions in White Nile, Blue Nile and Kordofan. Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohieldin Salem warned Ethiopia that the army and people are ready for open confrontation. Meanwhile, TPLF Number 2 Amanuel Assefa denied any connection to Sudanese authorities. former CIA Analyst Cameron Hudson previously noted unconfirmed reports of Rapid Support Forces commanders traveling to Ethiopia. While Khartoum frequently accuses the United Arab Emirates of equipping paramilitaries, Emirati officials deny these claims too.

PARAMILITARY CHIEF PREPARES FOR LONG WAR

On May 06, 2026, Rapid Support Forces head Mohamed Hamdane Daglo announced his forces are ready to fight for “decades” if necessary. In a video shared by local media, he warned that his fighters remain positioned on the outskirts of Khartoum and Omdurman. Army Chief Abdel Fattah Al Burhane maintained that his forces will fight until victory and that the war only ends when RSF disarm. HUMANITARIAN CRISIS DEEPENS IN BLUE NILE

Reports emerged detailing the dire conditions of displaced persons in Blue Nile state as it becomes a central battlefield. Displaced residents near Damazin declared that families receive only 1 meal per day and lack medicine for diseases like malaria. They fled Al Kurmuk after the city fell to the Rapid Support Forces. Acled Analyst Jalale Getachew Birru explained that the state has shifted from a peripheral front to a major conflict zone, with at least 450 people killed there in early 2026. UN Coordinator Denise Brown expressed concern that insecurity and funding shortages are paralyzing aid operations. Local authorities report over 150,000 people displaced in Blue Nile since April 2023, two thirds of whom sought refuge in Damazin.

CHAD

POLITICAL OPPONENTS IMPRISONED

On May 08, 2026, a court in N’Djamena sentenced 8 opponents of Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby to 8 years in prison following their arrests in late April. Lawyer Moussa Adoum criticized the ruling as an instrument of political pressure based on non-existent infractions. The defendants serve as presidents of parties within the Groupe de concertation des acteurs politiques (GCAP), which is the main opposition coalition representing 13 political parties. They were arrested a week before a banned protest walk. Just before the arrests, the Minister of Security announced the dissolution of GCAP. Charges included criminal association, insurrectional movement, rebellion and illegal possession of weapons. Human Rights Watch criticized a climate of terror.

BURKINA FASO

TELEVISION CHANNEL BANNED

On May 05, 2026, the military power in Burkina Faso banned the French television channel TV5 Monde for disinformation and apology of terrorism regarding jihadist violence. According to the communication council President Wendingoudi Louis Modeste Ouédraogo, the decision follows reporting on terrorist attacks that occurred in Mali. The junta, led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, accused the channel of using amateur images to tarnish the image of the army and demoralization. Reporters Without Borders Africa Bureau Director Sadibou Marong criticized the ban as a blow to the right to information. Media outlets like Le Monde, LCI, France 24, Radio France, BBC and Voice of America previously faced similar suspensions. Burkina Faso remains allied with Mali and Niger while fighting against armed groups like JNIM and EIS.

OVER 200 ASSOCIATIONS SUSPENDED BY JUNTA

On May 05, 2026, the Burkinabe junta suspended 205 associations. This measure, signed by Territorial Administration Minister Émile Zerbo, follows the suspension of 359 associations on April 21 and the dissolution of 118 others earlier. Since mid-April, the government has suspended a total of 564 associations. These organizations operate in sectors including health, education, agriculture and the environment. Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo stated that some association serve as a “Trojan horse”. Human Rights Watch warned that a July 2025 law allows the junta to intensify repression of civil society. The country continues to face offensives from groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and Islamic State.

ETHIOPIA-ERITREA

SUDANESE ARMY ACCUSED OF FINANCING TPLF

On May 05, 2026, Ethiopia accused the Sudanese army of providing arms and financial support to Tigray People’s Liberation Front men along the western border. This verbal escalation followed Khartoum recalling its ambassador after accusing Addis Ababa and the United Arab Emirates of involvement in a May 4 drone attack on Khartoum airport. Sudanese Army Spokesperson Assim Awad stated that drones launched from Bahir Dar, in Ethiopia, targeted military positions in White Nile, Blue Nile and Kordofan during March.

TIGRAY PARLIAMENT CHALLENGES FEDERAL AUTHORITY

On May 06, 2026, the Tigray regional Parliament elected Tigray People’s Liberation Front Chief Debretsion Gebremichael as its head. According to Tigray People’s Liberation Front Number 2 Amanuel Assefa, this election ended the interim administration designated by the federal government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Debretsion Gebremichael stated that the Pretoria peace agreement collapsed because of federal government actions. In April, Addis Ababa had extended the mandate of Interim Administration Head General Tadesse Worede. The region faces severe financial hardship after federal authorities cut subsidies while hundreds of thousands of people remain displaced from the previous war.

RWANDA

CRITICAL YOUTUBER DIES IN CUSTODY ON RELEASE DAY

On May 07, 2026, Rwandan authorities reported the death of YouTuber and former academic Aimable Karasira on the day he was due to be released. According to Correctional Services Spokesperson Hillary Sengabo, the prisoner died in a hospital following a drug overdose. His Lawyer Félicien Gashema stated he last saw his client on May 4. Aimable Karasira, a genocide survivor, was sentenced in September 2025 to 5 years in prison for “divisionism” after criticizing President Paul Kagame and the Rwandan Patriotic Front. Political analyst Louis Gitinywa called for an independent investigation while citing previous suspicious deaths in detention like singer Kizito Mihigo in February 2020 and rapper Joshua Tuyishime known as Jay Polly in 2021. President Paul Kagame faces criticism for the repression of dissidents. Several other YouTubers remain in prison.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL ACCUSES REBELS OF CRIMES

On May 05, 2026, Amnesty International released a report accusing Allied Democratic Forces rebels of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ituri and North Kivu. Based on 71 interviews conducted between October 2025 and February 2026, the document details systematic attacks against civilians as part of an offensive in the region. The group is responsible for kidnappings, forced labor and the recruitment of children for combat and other activities related to the armed group. According to the report, women and girls are regularly subjected to sexual slavery, forced conversions to Islam and forced marriages. Families of 7 hostages kidnapped in 2025 reported paying ransoms between 100 and 10,000 dollars for their release. Despite the joint operation by the Congolese and Ugandan armies since 2021, the rebels continue to target civilians for supplies and as retaliation for military operations.

TSHISEKEDI CONSIDERS THIRD PRESIDENTIAL TERM

On May 06, 2026, President Félix Tshisekedi announced he would accept a 3rd term if requested by the people through a constitutional referendum. Speaking at a press conference in Kinshasa, the 62 year old leader also mentioned a possible delay for the 2028 presidential election if the conflict in the East persists. He argued that voting cannot occur without the participation of the North Kivu and South Kivu provinces. While the opposition accuses him of maneuvers to stay in power, Félix Tshisekedi claimed his goal is to serve the country. He attributed the ongoing war to Rwanda for supporting M23 rebels. In December, an agreement signed in Washington under US President Donald Trump established a partnership to supply strategic minerals to American industry in exchange for infrastructure and military support. US sanctions were recently applied to his predecessor Joseph Kabila for supporting the M23.

REBEL ATTACKS KILL 36 CIVILIANS

On May 07, 2026, local sources reported that Allied Democratic Forces rebels killed at least 36 people during several attacks in the Northeast region. Between May 5-6, the group targeted isolated villages near the Beni-Mbau locality in North Kivu. Beni Mbau Civil Society President Kinos Kituho confirmed 24 deaths in the villages of Manzungu, Musamba, Wasafi and Mangambo. On May 7, rebels armed with guns and machetes attacked Biakato, in Ituri. Biakato Civil Society Head Mendela Musa stated that 15 bodies were recovered including 11 men, 3 women and 1 child. The joint Shujaa operation involving Congolese and Ugandan armies has failed to end the violence in these forest areas.

CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC

REINTEGRATION OF CHILD SOLDIERS REMAINS CHALLENGING

On May 05, 2026, humanitarian efforts to reintegrate former child soldiers in Bria faced increasing obstacles because of funding cuts and renewed fighting. Teenagers aged 14 to 17 struggle with trauma while learning trades like sewing. Victims include child soldiers in the armed group Unité pour la paix en Centrafrique, and young girls used as a sexual slave at 14. NGO Espérance official Karl Malone reported that Haute-Kotto region children currently need help but only 100 receive support. The organization, partially funded by UNICEF, suffered from the dismantling of USAID following the return of US President Donald Trump. A UN report indicates that recruitment remains one of the most frequent violation of children’s rights in the country. UNICEF estimates that approximately 2,000 children are still used by armed groups.

MALI

JUNTA CHIEF REINFORCES HIS POWER

On May 04, 2026, Junta Chief Assimi Goïta decided to take the role of Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs following the death of General Sadio Camara. Assimi Goïta will be supported by former Army Chief General Oumar Diarra, who was named Delegate Minister.

UN ALARMED BY EXTRAJUDICIAL EXECUTIONS

On May 05, 2026, the United Nations expressed grave concern regarding reports of extrajudicial executions and kidnappings by security forces. UN Human Rights Spokesperson Seif Magango stated that these violations allegedly occurred following coordinated attacks by jihadists and Tuareg rebels on April 25 and April 26. The Malian military government remains weakened by recent insurgent offensives.

MILITARY LEADERSHIP REORGANIZED AMID CRACKDOWN

On May 06, 2026, the Malian junta appointed General Elisé Jean Dao as the new Army Chief of Staff to replace General Oumar Diarra. This change follows the death of Minister of Defense General Sadio Camara and the insurgent offensives that killed at least 23 people. JIHADIST ATTACKS KILL OVER 30 PEOPLE

On May 06, 2026, local officials confirmed that jihadist militants killed at least 35 people during simultaneous attacks across central Mali. The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) claimed responsibility for massacres in Kori Kori where 25 villagers died and Gomossogou where 10 were killed. Journalist collective Wamaps suggested the death toll could reach 50 people. Bandiagara Governor Colonel Major Olivier Diassana condemned these acts. A security source stated the killings were retaliation against the Dan Nan Ambassagou militia. While most victims were militiamen, civilians were killed too, including children. BAMAKO RESIDENTS LYNCHED

On May 7, 2026, reports emerged detailing the lynching of innocent civilians in Bamako who were wrongly accused of being terrorists. In the Medina Coura district, a crowd beat and burned Abdoulaye Diarra to death because of his long hair and worn clothes, which were associated with an armed group. Journalist Moussa Diarra confirmed the victim had no links to armed groups. Army Public Relations Deputy Director Commandant Djibrila Maiga acknowledged that fear from recent attacks led citizens to target innocents based on physical appearance. Some people reported altering their dress or hiding at home to avoid being profiled as rebels. The JNIM has used these incidents to justify road blockades of the capital which began on April 30 in retaliation for alleged abuses against people assimilated with the insurgency.

MALI REJECTS DIALOGUE WITH INSURGENTS

On May 8, 2026, Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop announced that the Malian government refuses to negotiate with armed groups. He stated the government will not engage with the Front de libération de l’Azawad or the JNIM, responsible for recent attacks. Witnesses reported that militants burned convoys transporting fresh fish and goods on the axis between Bamako and Kayes. NGO workers in Kita noted that hundreds of stranded people are sleeping on the ground. Despite these challenges, some vehicles entered the capital under escort from the Malian army and Africa Corps paramilitaries.

LEBANON

13 CIVILIANS KILLED IN THE SOUTH BY ISRAELI STRIKES

On May 01, 2026, Israeli bombardments killed at least 13 people in southern Lebanon according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. 8 individuals including died, 1 child and 2 women, in the village of Habboush. Another strike on Zrariyé killed 4 people including 2 women and 4 others were injured. 1 woman died in the Tyre district. The Lebanese National News Agency reported intense strikes and artillery fire across several locations despite the ceasefire. The Israeli army maintains a 10 kilometer deep exclusion zone along the border where it carries out demolition operations. Since the resumption of hostilities on March 2, more than 2.600 people have been killed, including 103 rescuers.

3 PEOPLE KILLED BY ISRAELI FIRE IN SAMMAAIYEH, RELIGIOUS BUILDING IN YAROUN DAMAGED

On May 02, 2026, at least 3 people died during a series of Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon according to state media. The victims were located in the town of Sammaaiyeh south of Tyre. The Israeli army claimed to have hit approximately 70 military structures and dismantled 50 Hezbollah sites. Hezbollah launched retaliatory attacks against Israeli troops citing violations of the ceasefire agreement. On the same day, the Israeli military confirmed its forces damaged a structure on a religious site in Yaroun. Israeli Army Spokesperson Colonel Avichay Adraee stated that there were no visible signs indicating the house was a religious building. He justified the military presence by claiming Hezbollah fired rockets from the site. The French Catholic association L’Oeuvre d’Orient denounced the voluntary destruction of a monastery and a school belonging to the Salvatorian sisters. Lebanese Army Chief Rodolphe Haykal met with US General Joseph Clearfield to discuss the security situation and the effectiveness of the committee monitoring the ceasefire.

1 CIVILIAN KILLED AND 8 INJURED IN ARABSALIM AND SRIFA, NEW EVACUATION ORDERS

On May 03, 2026, Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed 1 person and injured 8 others including 4 rescuers according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. A raid on Arabsalim killed 1 person and injured 3 including 1 child. Another strike near a center in Srifa injured 5 people including 4 rescuers from the Islamic Health Committee. The Ministry of Health condemned these attacks as violations of the Geneva Convention. The Israeli army issued urgent evacuation orders for several localities situated beyond the “security zone”. Israeli Army Spokesperson Avichai Adraee posted the injunction on X for residents of towns including Nabatiyeh which is located several kilometers north of the 10 kilometer yellow line. Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir warned that any threat beyond the Litani River would be eliminated. Hezbollah MP Hassan Fadlallah stated the organization rejects the ongoing peace negotiations and is capable of making them fail.

ISRAEL PREPARES AIR FORCE FOR POTENTIAL STRIKES

On May 05, 2026, the new Chief of the Israeli Air Force General Omer Tischler declared his force is ready to deploy, including in Iran. During his inauguration ceremony replacing General Tomer Bar, he stated that the air force continues to strike Hezbollah in Lebanon. Born in 1975 in northern Israel, General Tischler previously served as Chief of Staff of the Air Force.

ISRAEL ORDERS EVACUATION OF 12 SOUTHERN VILLAGES, 4 KILLED IN ZELLAYA

On May 06, 2026, the Israeli army called for the immediate evacuation of 12 villages in southern Lebanon ahead of planned strikes. Israeli Army Spokesperson Avichai Adraee instructed residents to move at least 1.000 meters away into open areas. Later, a strike on the village of Zellaya in the Bekaa Valley killed 4 people according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. The raid targeted the house of the mayor who died alongside 3 family members while 5 other people were injured. Bombardments also hit the Beaufort Castle region and Yohmor al-Shaqif. Hezbollah responded by targeting Israeli vehicles in border towns citing ceasefire violations. Since March 2, more than 2.700 people have died and 8.200 wounded in Lebanon while the Israeli army had 17 men KIA.

HIGH RANKING HEZBOLLAH COMMANDER KILLED IN BEIRUT, 11 DEAD IN SAKSAKIYEH

On May 06, 2026, an Israeli strike on the southern suburb of Beirut killed Malek Ballout who served as the commander of operations for the elite Al Radwan force. The bombardment occurred in the Ghobeiri neighborhood and targeted an apartment where a meeting of officials was taking place. In Saksakiyeh, strikes killed at least 11 people including 6 children and injured 33 others. 1 Israeli soldier died in a drone attack the same day. WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported 152 attacks on health structures since March.

ISRAELI ARMY INVESTIGATES SOLDIER FOR VANDALIZING CHRISTIAN STATUE

On May 07, 2026, the Israeli military announced an investigation into a photograph showing a soldier placing a cigarette in the mouth of a Virgin Mary statue in southern Lebanon. The image was widely shared on social media and a military spokesperson stated it appears to have been taken several weeks ago. The army emphasized that disciplinary measures will be taken.

ISRAELI RAIDS HIT NABATIYEH COMMERCIAL CENTER & AN AMBULANCE

On May 07, 2026, the Israeli air force targeted several locations in southern Lebanon including a commercial center and residential buildings in Nabatiyeh. Another strike in the Marjayoun area killed 1 ambulance driver from the Islamic Health Committee and injured another, as reported by Islamic Health Committee Spokesperson Mahmoud Karaki. 4 Israeli soldiers were injured by an explosive drone.

AT LEAST 11 CIVILIANS INCLUDING 2 CHILDREN KILLED

On May 07, 2026, at least 11 people, possibly 12, died during Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon despite the ongoing ceasefire. The Ministry of Health reported that 11 people including 2 children were killed in bombardments across 3 villages in the Nabatiyeh region.

ISRAELI STRIKE KILLS RESCUER, 3 MILLION PEOPLE DEPEND ON HUMANITARIAN AID

On May 08, 2026, an Israeli strike killed a rescuer on the road between Rachaya and Kfarchouba in southern Lebanon. The Lebanese Civil Defense announced the death following the loss of another paramedic from the Islamic Health Committee the previous day. More Israeli strikes killed 10 people in 4 different localities in southern Lebanon according to the Ministry of Health. EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Crisis Situations Hadja Lahbib reported that more than half of the Lebanese population requires aid to survive. The European Union has provided 100 million euros in emergency assistance since March 2 and has delivered 6 aid flights. Peace talks between Israel and Lebanon are scheduled to take place the next week in Washington.

SYRIA

JORDANIAN AIR STRIKES TARGET SOUEIDA

On May 02, 2026, Syrian state television reported Jordanian strikes against drug and weapons warehouses in the southern province of Soueida. The Jordanian army stated it conducted a deterrence operation against smugglers along the northern border and will continue to act against threats to its sovereignty. Local sources indicated that 5 locations were hit including warehouses in the town of Arman. Since the fall of al-Assad in December 2024, Damascus and Amman have committed to fighting cross border trafficking.

SYRIA DISMANTLES HEZBOLLAH CELL

On May 05, 2026, the Syrian Ministry of the Interior announced it foiled a terrorist plan by dismantling a Hezbollah cell. Security operations took place near Damascus and in the provinces of Aleppo, Homs, Tartous, and Lattaquié. Authorities arrested 11 people and seized firearms, explosives, and surveillance equipment. The Ministry claimed the cell members entered Syria clandestinely after receiving training in Lebanon to operate targeted assassinations. Hezbollah denied these accusations stating it has no presence in Syria anymore.

EX GENERALS ARRESTED FOR 2013 CHEMICAL ATTACK

On May 08, 2026, the Syrian Ministry of the Interior announced the arrest of former Brigadier General Khardal Ahmad Dayoub for his role in the 2013 Ghouta chemical attack. He is accused of coordinating the bombardment that killed at least 1.429 people including 426 children. Another former officer, General Sahel Fajr Hassan, was also arrested for his participation in operations of repression against the Syrian people. These arrests follow that of General Adnan Abboud Hilweh in April. The current Islamic authorities have promised justice for the crimes committed by the previous regime after Bachar al-Assad fled to Moscow in 2024.

PALESTINE

ISRAELI COURT PROLONGS DETENTION OF 2 ACTIVISTS

On May 03, 2026, a court in Ashkelon ordered a 2 day extension for the detention of Spanish activist Saif Abu Keshek and Brazilian activist Thiago Avila. They were among 175 militants arrested while traveling on a fleet of 20 boats known as the Gaza Flotilla which aimed to break the Israeli blockade to deliver aid. Lawyer Hadeel Abou Salih stated the men were on a peaceful humanitarian mission to Gaza and rejected accusations. Miriam Azem from the Israeli NGO Adalah reported the arrest was brutal and the men were informed they would be interrogated by Israeli internal intelligence for suspected affiliation with a terrorist organization. Thiago Avila told lawyers he was dragged face down and beaten until he lost consciousness. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Oren Marmorstein denied any torture and claimed Saif Abu Keshek is a leader of the Conference for Palestinians Abroad which Israel and the United States accuse of being affiliated with Hamas. Spanish Minister José Manuel Albares called the arrest illegal and demanded the immediate release of the Spanish national.

1 MAN KILLED DURING ISRAELI RAID IN NABLUS

On May 03, 2026, Israeli forces killed a 26 year old man and injured 4 others during clashes in Nablus according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. The victim was identified as Nayef Firas Ziad Samaro and both he and the injured were hit by live ammunition. Witnesses reported that Israeli troops entered several neighborhoods to search shops and later responded to stones being thrown at military vehicles with tear gas and live fire. ITALY OPENS KIDNAPPING INQUIRY OVER GAZA FLOTILLA INTERCEPTION

On May 04, 2026, the Rome prosecutor’s office opened an investigation for kidnapping following the boarding of the Gaza Flotilla by Israeli forces. The inquiry focuses on the detention of Spanish activist Saif Abu Keshek and Brazilian activist Thiago Avila who were on an Italian flagged vessel when arrested in international waters. The interception took place off the coast of Crete hundreds of kilometers from Gaza. The Global Sumud flotilla involving 175 militants of various nationalities aimed to break the blockade to provide humanitarian aid.

400 EX DIPLOMATS URGE ACTION AGAINST ISRAELI COLONIZATION

UKRAINIAN MAN JAILED IN FRANCE FOR CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY

FORMER SERBIAN PARAMILITARY SENTENCED FOR WAR CRIMES
