SUDAN

ACUTE HUNGER CRISIS THREATENS MILLIONS

On May 15, 2026, the UN warned that nearly 20 million people in Sudan which represents over 40% of the population suffer from acute hunger. WFP Director Cindy McCain and UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell called for urgent international action to prevent a worsening tragedy. 19.5 million people are facing critical hunger levels. Catastrophic hunger currently affects 135,000 individuals across 14 zones in North Darfur, South Darfur and South Kordofan. Russell warned that more children will die without rapid measures because many arrive at health centers too weak already.

DRONE STRIKE KILLS 28 AT MARKET IN GHUBAYSH

On May 19, 2026, a drone strike on a market in Ghubaysh located in West Kordofan State killed 28 people and injured 23 others. Witnesses reported that the drone hit a crowded restaurant after striking a Rapid Support Forces vehicle. Witnesses attributed the attack to the Sudanese army, while a military source denied responsibility. Victims were transported to the local hospital. An alliance aligned with the Rapid Support Forces condemned the strike and accused the army of campaigns against civilians. The independent group Emergency Lawyers documented the event and noted that the market is a crucial site for civilians to obtain food. This attack occurred as drone warfare increases in the conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.

TANZANIA

POLICE COMMISSIONER SANCTIONED BY THE US FOR TORTURE

On May 22, 2026, reports confirmed the US sanctioned Senior Assistant Commissioner Faustine Jackson Mafwele for the torture and sexual assault of human rights defenders. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the measures following credible evidence of grave human rights violations. In May 2025, Tanzanian police detained Ugandan human rights activist Agather Atuhaire and Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi in Dar es Salaam where they attended the trial of opposition leader Tundu Lissu. Atuhaire alleged that Mafwele personally threatened them and ordered their kidnapping and torture at the central police station. While the US banned Mafwele from entering in the US, Atuhaire argued sanctions should also target President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The incident highlights broader repression including electoral violence in October and November that killed 2,000 people, according to NGOs and the opposition. Tanzanian authorities have remained silent regarding these sanctions and accusations of systematic abuse.

NIGERIA

ISLAMIC STATE OFFICIAL ELIMINATED

On May 17, 2026, a joint US and Nigerian military operation killed Abu Bilal al-Minuki who served as the second in command of the Islamic State globally. Army spokesperson Michael Onoja described the mission as a complex air to ground operation in the northeast. Al-Minuki was tracked via several regular phones and a Thuraya satellite phone. The New York Times reported that 20 Nigerian and US special operations commandos conducted the attack while other sources mentioned only airstrikes on Metele, Dogon Chukwu and Matari. At least 17 other individuals died. Al-Minuki previously led Boko Haram before joining Islamic State in 2015 and supervised operations in the Sahel and West Africa. The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused him of recent attacks against the army.

NEW JOINT STRIKES TARGET ISLAMIC STATE

On May 18, 2026, the Africom announced that the US and Nigeria conducted coordinated airstrikes against Islamic State militants in the northeast. Nigerian forces confirmed killing over 20 fighters from EI/ISWAP. Nigerian President Bola Tinubu thanked US President Donald Trump for his support and expressed a desire for more decisive strikes against terrorist areas. Since 2009, the conflict involving Boko Haram and ISWAP has caused over 40,000 deaths and 2 million displacements according to the UN. Criminal gangs also frequently carry out village attacks and mass kidnappings for ransom.

MASS ABDUCTION TARGETS SOUTHERN SCHOOLS

On May 18, 2026, the Christian Association of Nigeria announced that 46 people including many children were kidnapped from 3 schools in Oyo State. Armed men simultaneously attacked the Baptist nursery and primary school in Yawota and 2 other establishments in Esiele on May 15. Reverend Elisha Olukayode Ogundiya reported that victims are aged 2 to 16. Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed that 7 teachers were abducted and 1 Quranic studies teacher was killed. He attributed the attack to armed groups fleeing military pressure in the northwest.

AIRSTRIKES ELIMINATE 175 MILITANTS AND LEADERS

On May 19, 2026, Nigerian military spokesperson Samaila Uba announced that 175 Islamic State militants were killed during several days of joint airstrikes with the US. The campaign in the northeast destroyed checkpoints, weapon caches, logistics centers and financial networks supporting terrorism. Prominent leaders eliminated included ISWAP officials Abd-al Wahhab, Abu Musa al-Mangawi and Abu al-Muthanna al-Muhajir. Abu Bilal al-Minuki, an important global agent, was previously killed on May 16 in a remote village. 306 Nigerian soldiers were killed during the first quarter of 2026.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

EBOLA OUTBREAK AMIDST WAR

On May 19, 2026, the Ebola epidemic spread across eastern Democratic Republic of Congo where numerous armed groups operate. The virus focus originated in Mongbwalu within the gold rich Ituri province which faces violence between the Hema and Lendu communities. While the Codeco militia defends Lendu interests, the CRP group aligns with the Hema people. Allied Democratic Forces rebels are linked to Islamic State. The M23 group supported by Rwanda also controls large areas which complicates the health response. ICRC Head of Delegation François Moreillon urged combatants to allow humanitarian access. A first contamination case was confirmed in Goma which has been under M23 control since January 2025. M23 governors in North and South Kivu announced health tracking teams and reinforced sanitary measures to manage the crisis within their parallel administration. M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka reported that no new cases were registered.

OPPOSITION COALITION CHALLENGES CONSTITUTIONAL REVISION

On May 19, 2026, major opposition parties in Democratic Republic of Congo launched the C64 coalition to block potential constitutional changes. During a press conference in Kinshasa, leaders including Martin Fayulu, Moïse Katumbi, Augustin Matata Ponyo, Delly Sesanga and Jean Marc Kabund united against attempts by President Félix Tshisekedi to extend his rule. The current constitution limits presidents to 2 terms, which for Tshisekedi, ends in 2028. A proposed bill in the National Assembly would allow revisions. The C64 labeled this a grave threat to national stability. Although President Félix Tshisekedi suggested delaying the 2028 election due to the M23 conflict, the coalition insisted he must leave power at the end of his mandate.

EBOLA SPREADS TO SOUTH KIVU PROVINCE

On May 21, 2026, authorities reported the first Ebola transmission cases in South Kivu while the health response faced obstacles in Ituri. M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka confirmed a positive case in Kabare territory. In Ituri, a riot erupted at Rwampara hospital where youth burned isolation tents to recover a deceased patient’s body. Kigonze displacement site manager Désiré Grodya warned that 16,000 displaced people lack basic hand washing facilities. Border hygiene manager Aimé Prospère implemented temperature checks at Bunia airport.

MALI

BUSES SET ON FIRE NEAR BAMAKO DURING JIHADIST ROAD BLOCKADE

On May 16, 2026, armed men attacked and burned a convoy of buses in the Faya forest area located 40 kilometers from Bamako on the road to Ségou. Anonymous witnesses and an anonymous local official reported that attackers forced passengers to dismount before incinerating 7 vehicles. Some drivers were wounded by gunfire for not obeying instructions immediately. An anonymous local official and an anonymous witness explained that the burning of trucks carrying sheep has caused a shortage in the capital. Since April 30, the JNIM and the Azawad Liberation Front have maintained a blockade on strategic routes following coordinated strikes on April 25 and 26.

10 CIVILIANS MURDERED BY MALIAN ARMY DRONE STRIKE DURING WEDDING

On May 17, 2026, Malian army drone strikes killed at least 10 civilians including young people in the town of Téné. The victims were preparing for a traditional collective wedding when drones targeted a procession. This event occurred as the junta weakened following April 25 and 26 attacks by the JNIM and Azawad Liberation Front which led to the loss of Kidal and the death of Malian Defense Minister Sadio Camara. On April 20, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and 2 other organizations filed a complaint against the Malian army and its Russian allies for human rights violations.

REFUGEES DESCRIBE DECAPITATIONS AND TORTURE BY RUSSIAN FORCES

On May 19, 2026, Malian refugees provided testimonies to journalist Eléonore Sens, photographer Patrick Meinhardt and videographer Elena Boffetta regarding atrocities by Malian forces and Russian Africa Corps paramilitaries. A woman described how a commando decapitated her son and 4 others in August. A Tuareg refugee reported being tortured with electricity for 4 days at the Bapho camp by Russians after being arrested near Timbuktu and paying 310,000 francs for release. Doctor Without Border coordinator Mayoury Savant noted that 300,000 refugees in the Hohd Chargui region faced sexual violence and some being buried alive. Acled data shows that Malian and Russian forces have killed over 8,500 people since the 2020 coup led by General Assimi Goïta.

MALIAN ARMY DRONE STRIKES IN KIDAL

On May 22, 2026, the Malian army and Russian mercenaries utilized drones to bomb the governorate and a youth house in the city of Kidal. Local sources and an anonymous military source confirmed the strikes took place on the night of May 21 and the morning of May 22. An official from the Azawad Liberation Front on site and a resident stated that while the buildings were destroyed, there were no casualties among the population. A Malian military source claimed the strikes targeted rebels meeting at the site. Kidal has been controlled by Azawad Liberation Front and JNIM forces since late April.

25 MURDERED DURING COORDINATED JIHADIST RAIDS

On May 22, 2026, reports confirmed that suspected jihadists killed at least 25 people during coordinated attacks on 5 villages in the Bandiagara region. The raids occurred on May 21 against communities that refused to sign local agreements with the JNIM. An anonymous local official from the Bandiagara Regional Youth Council stated that the victims were primarily civilians and Dozo hunters. The attackers burned villages and stole livestock which caused families to flee on May 22. No official response to the situation followed according to local people.

LEBANON

6 KILLED AND 20 VILLAGES HIT BY ISRAELI RAIDS, HEZBOLLAH STRIKES ISRAEL

On May 17, 2026, Israel carried out strikes on 20 villages in southern Lebanon despite a truce extension. The Lebanese National News Agency reported that one strike occurred more than 50 km north of the border. The Lebanese Ministry of Health confirmed 6 people were killed including 3 rescuers from the Islamic Health Committee. The public authorities reported 3 deaths in Tayr Felsay and 2 in Tayr Debba including 1 child in each location. The Lebanese National News Agency (ANI) reported 2 strikes on Sohmor and subsequent bombings near Saïda and Nabatiyé. In the city of Tyre, 37 people were injured in strikes on a residential area according to witnesses. Meanwhile, Hezbollah claimed an attack on a barracks in Ya’ara in northern Israel. According to the Israeli army, the armed group fired about 200 projectiles at Israel and its troops in Lebanon over the weekend. These clashes occurred after emissaries from both countries agreed to extend the ceasefire by 45 days.

MORE STRIKES, CASUALTIES SINCE MARCH REACH 3,020 KILLED

On May 18, 2026, Israeli strikes killed 7 people including a leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The Lebanese National News Agency reported that leader Wael Abdel Halim and his 17 year old daughter were killed by a missile strike on an apartment near Baalbek. About 15 people were injured in the southern strikes. A strike destroyed a health center run by Hezbollah affiliated rescuers in Maachouq. The Israeli army called for evacuations and Hezbollah Member of Parliament Hussein Hajj Hassan rejected disarmament demands. Total casualties since march 2 include nearly 3,020 people killed and 9,273 injured in Lebanon. It includes the death of 116 medical personnel and 211 children or minors. The Lebanese government also recorded 9,273 injured individuals. 21 Israelis have been killed on the same period.

ISRAELI ARMY BOMBARDS SOUTHERN LOCALITIES

On May 19, 2026, the Israeli army conducted new air and artillery strikes in southern Lebanon while issuing evacuation orders for 12 localities. A strike in Maachouq caused the collapse of 2 floors of a building and damaged neighboring structures and cars. According to the Lebanese National News Agency, a strike in Nabatiyé destroyed a neighborhood containing shops and an old mosque. The Lebanese Civil Defense reported that 3 Lebanese remain captive following an Israeli patrol in Hasbaya.

23 KILLED IN DEIR QANOUNE AL-NAHR AND OTHER LOCALITIES

On May 19, 2026, the Lebanese Ministry of Health described the attack on the town of Deir Qanoune al-Nahr in the district of Tyre as a massacre, with 14 killed. The victims included 4 children and 3 women. The ministry also reported that 3 other people were injured including 1 child. Other raids across the south killed 9 people including 1 woman and injured 29 others. A neighborhood in Nabatiyé was also largely destroyed. This event took place despite the ceasefire in effect between Israel and Hezbollah.

FAMILIES SEEK INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE FOR BLACK WEDNESDAY

On May 20, 2026, Lebanese relatives of victims promised to take legal action before international bodies for family members killed in Israeli strikes. During “Black Wednesday” on April 8, mass raids killed over 350 people in Lebanon. Among those cases, humanitarian worker Ghida Krisht lost her father and her mother, the poet Khatoun Salma. Israel claimed to have targeted a Hezbollah commander. However, neighbors identified victims at the site as an elderly man, his autistic son and an Ethiopian domestic worker. Only Franco Lebanese artist Ali Cherri has previously sought legal recourse in France.

9 INJURED IN ISRAELI ATTACK ON TEBNINE HOSPITAL

On May 21, 2026, an Israeli strike injured 9 people and damaged Tebnine Government Hospital in southern Lebanon. The Lebanese Ministry of Health stated that the victims included 7 hospital staff members of which 5 were women. Damage was reported in the emergency and intensive care units along with ambulances. Hezbollah claimed drone and rocket attacks against Israeli forces occupying southern localities.

ISRAEL ACCUSED OF DESTROYING 50,000 BUILDINGS

On May 22, 2026, displaced residents reported that the village of Yaroun and dozens of other southern localities have been entirely destroyed by Israel. Displaced resident Hala Farah used satellite images to confirm the ruin of her family home. Lebanese authorities accuse Israel of “urbicide” with 50,000 buildings damaged  or destroyed and 56,000 hectares of agricultural land destroyed since march 2. Targets included Saint George’s school, a nun’s convent and many other civilian infrastructures. Researcher Hana Jaber confirmed that most demolitions in Bint Jbeil occurred during the truce. Municipal councillor Imad Bazzi estimated the city is 75% destroyed. Over 1,000,000 people have been displaced.

6 KILLED BY ISRAEL DESPITE CEASEFIRE

On May 22, 2026, the Israeli army announced that an airstrike killed 2 armed individuals near the border in southern Lebanon. According to the official Lebanese news agency, another night strike on Hanawiya near Tyre killed 4 health workers. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that hostilities since march 2 have killed 3,089 people including 116 health workers and rescuers.

CHILD AND 2 RESCUERS AMONG 6 KILLED IN DEIR QANOUNE AL-NAHR

On May 22, 2026, the Lebanese Ministry of Health announced that 6 people were killed in an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon. The attack targeted the village of Deir Qanoune al-Nahr in the Tyre region. The victims included a Syrian girl and 2 rescuers from the Amal movement of which 1 also worked as a freelance photographer. This strike occurred despite the current ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

PALESTINE

ISRAEL TARGETS HAMAS MILITARY CHIEF EZZEDINE AL-HADDAD

On May 15, 2026, the Israeli Ministry of Defense announced targeting Ezzedine al-Haddad, the commander of the Hamas military branch, in an airstrike in Gaza. The Israeli army identified him as a key architect of the October 7 massacre. According to the Gaza Civil Defense, fighter jets bombed a residential building in the Al-Ramal neighborhood of Gaza City killing 1 person and injuring 20 others. Israeli authorities accused Ezzedine al-Haddad of maintaining hostages in brutal conditions and refusing the peace plan. A military official stated that since the october 10 truce, the commander has worked to restore the capabilities of the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades.

A MAN KILLED BY ISRAELI SOLDIERS IN JENIN

On May 16, 2026, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that Israeli soldiers killed Nour al-Din Kamal Hassan Fayyad in the Jenin refugee camp. The Palestinian Red Crescent reported taking charge of the victim who suffered a gunshot wound. The Israeli army claimed soldiers fired at a suspect who failed to obey warnings while attempting to enter a restricted zone. This incident occurred in the context of a large-scale military operation launched in January 2025 in the northern West Bank. UNRWA reports that these operations have displaced nearly 40,000 Palestinians. Since October 2023, 1,073 Palestinians and 46 Israelis have been killed in the West Bank.

5 KILLED BY ISRAELI STRIKES AND GUNFIRE IN GAZA, 72,763 DEATHS IN TOTAL

On May 17, 2026, the Gaza Civil Defense and local hospitals reported that Israeli strikes and gunfire killed 5 people in the Gaza Strip. According to this Hamas affiliated organization, a drone strike killed 3 people in Deir el-Balah. Another Palestinian was killed in a strike in the al-Mawasi district near Khan Yunis while gunfire killed a 5th person in Gaza City. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel is close to completing its mission of eliminating every architect of the October 7 massacre. His office confirmed the death of Ezzedine Al-Haddad, commander of the Hamas military branch, following a targeted airstrike. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu previously highlighted that Israeli forces now control 60% of Gaza, suggesting an advance beyond the “yellow line” established at the ceasefire agreement. Since the war began in 2023, the Ministry of Health has recorded at least 72,763 deaths. Independent verification of tolls remains difficult due to Israeli imposed media restrictions but the UN consider the number credible.

YASSER ABBAS ELECTED TO FATAH CENTRAL COMMITTEE

On May 17, 2026, preliminary results confirmed the election of Yasser Abbas, the son of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, to the Fatah central committee. The vote occurred during the 8th general congress held across Ramallah, Gaza, Cairo and Beirut. Yasser Abbas is a 64 year old businessman primarily residing in Canada. Marwan Barghouti, currently imprisoned in Israel, retained his seat with the highest number of votes. Other re-elected officials include Vice-President Hussein Al-Sheikh, Mahmoud Al-Aloul, Jibril Rajoub and Taoufik al-Tiraoui. New members include intelligence chief Majed Faraj and former prisoner Zakaria Zubeidi.

UN DEMANDS ISRAEL TO PREVENT GENOCIDE IN GAZA

On May 18, 2026, the United Nations demanded that Israel take all possible measures to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza and the West Bank. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk cited evidence of ethnic cleansing and war crimes. Head of the UN office in Palestinian territories Ajith Sunghay reported that forced displacements in the West Bank reached the highest level in decades. Commissioner Ajith Sunghay noted that while the october ceasefire reduced violence, destruction continues daily.

ISRAELI NAVY INTERCEPTS GLOBAL SUMUD FLOTILLA OFF CYPRUS

On May 18, 2026, Israeli forces intercepted a new “Flotilla for Gaza” composed of about 50 boats off the coast of Cyprus. The Global Sumud organization reported that military vessels violently boarded their lead ship in international waters. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the naval commander for the successful operation. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the intervention as an act of piracy. Among those detained were Margaret Connolly, sister of Irish President Catherine Connolly, and two journalists from the Indonesian newspaper Republika. Suayb Ordu, a Turkish activist, stated that militants surrendered peacefully.

ICC PROSECUTOR REQUESTS ARREST WARRANT FOR BEZALEL SMOTRICH

On May 19, 2026, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced that an International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor requested an arrest warrant against him. The minister accused the Palestinian Authority of initiating the process and described the move as a declaration of war. Minister Bezalel Smotrich promised immediate retaliation by signing an evacuation order for the Bedouin community of Khan al-Ahmar. Muayad Shaaban, minister of the Palestinian colonization resistance commission, called for international intervention to protect the village. Lior Amihai, director of Peace Now, warned that the government is moving toward full annexation. This follows previous ICC warrants issued in november 2024 against Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant.

UN EXPERT DENOUNCES TORTURE OF PALESTINIAN PRISONERS

On May 19, 2026, UN Special Rapporteur Alice Jill Edwards denounced the systematic torture and deaths of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons. She documented 52 cases of torture and 33 cases of sexual violence including electrocution and sleep deprivation. Rapporteur Edwards reported that at least 94 deaths in detention have occurred since October 2023 without investigation. She noted that 1,680 complaints against Israeli intelligence services resulted in zero indictments. Currently over 9,000 Palestinians remain in custody. The expert also announced a new investigation into abuses committed by Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Palestinian Authority.

15 YEAR OLD KILLED BY ISRAELI SOLDIER IN NABLUS

On May 20, 2026, a report detailed the death of 15 year old Youssef Shtayyeh who was killed by an Israeli soldier in Nablus. Witnesses saw the teenager throwing stones on April 23 before a soldier exited a jeep and fired, hitting him in the back. Dr. Bahaa Fattouh at the hospital confirmed the wound was fatal. UNICEF reports that on average one Palestinian minor is killed every week since January 2025. Major General Avi Bluth stated that 42 Palestinians were killed for stone throwing in 2025. Sameh Shtayyeh, father of the victim, questioned the danger posed by children to armored patrols.

ITAMAR BEN GVIR SPARKS OUTRAGE WITH VIDEO OF HUMILIATED MILITANTS

On May 20, 2026, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir caused international outrage by publishing a video of Flotilla activists kneeling, handcuffed and mistreated. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated the images did not reflect Israeli values while Foreign Minister Gideon Saar accused Itamar Ben Gvir of harming the country’s image. In response, France summoned the Israeli ambassador. Rome described the treatment as inadmissible and Spain called it monstrous. The NGO Adalah claimed the 430 activists were kidnapped in international waters. Israeli authorities transferred hundreds of those activists to the port of Ashdod. The NGO Adalah reported that the 430 participants were taken against their will. Since 2007, Gaza has remained under blockade.

ISRAELI KNESSET VOTES TO BEGIN DISSOLUTION PROCESS, ISRAELI SUPREME COURT CONFIRMS BAN ON NGOS

On May 20, 2026, the Israeli Parliament voted 110 to 10 in a preliminary reading to dissolve the assembly and trigger early elections. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces a coalition crisis as ultra-orthodox parties protest his failure to pass a law exempting religious students from military service. Opposition leader Yair Lapid stated the campaign has begun while Naftali Bennett, leader of the Beyahad party, called for the Prime Minister to step down. Polls show the Likoud party with a narrow lead over Beyahad. The same day, the Israeli Supreme Court confirmed a government order banning 37 foreign NGOs from operating in Palestinian territories. The organizations including MSF, Oxfam and CARE must provide lists of their Palestinian employees within 30 days or cease activities. COGAT claims this procedure prevents Hamas infiltration. FRANCE OPPOSES MILITARY PROJECT ON DEMOLISHED UNRWA HEADQUARTERS

On May 21, 2026, the French government called on Israel to withdraw a project to build a Ministry of Defense complex on the site of the former UNRWA headquarters. Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that the site in East Jerusalem would house a recruitment office and a museum. The original building was demolished on January 20. UN Secretary General António Guterres condemned the move as an escalatory violation of United Nations immunity. Israel designated UNRWA as a terrorist organization over alleged links to Hamas.

ISRAEL EXPELS ALL FOREIGN FLOTILLA ACTIVISTS

On May 21, 2026, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oren Marmorstein announced that Israel expelled all foreign activists captured during the flotilla interception. Prisoners were transferred from Ktziot prison to Ramon airport. Moatassem Zeidan from the NGO Adalah confirmed that the detainees were not brought before a court. A German Israeli activist remains in custody to face a tribunal in Ashkelon.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski announced his intention to ban Israeli Minister Itamar Ben Gvir from the possibility to enter the Polish territory. This decision follows the release of a video showing humiliated Polish activists, among other. Spokesperson Maciej Wewior confirmed the Polish nationals were released from Israeli custody. On February 24, 1996, Cuban MIGs shot down 2 Cessna planes belonging to the Brothers to the Rescue association which resulted in 4 deaths. Exile and association founder José Basulto, who piloted a 3rd plane that escaped the attack, stated he remained haunted by the event.

FORMER AUSTRIAN INTELLIGENCE AGENT CONVICTED OF SPYING FOR RUSSIA

A 63 year old former intelligence agent Egisto Ott was sentenced to over 4 years in prison for spying for Russia. A jury convicted him for espionage against Austria, abuse of power and corruption between 2015 and 2022. Ott acted on instructions from former Wirecard leader Jan Marsalek who is a suspected agent for the Russian FSB. He transmitted mobile phones of high ranking officials and a secure communication laptop which was later sold to Iran. Ott also provided information on individuals threatened by Russia and assisted Arkadi Rotenberg who is a business associate of President Vladimir Poutine. While Ott has appealed the sentence.

PHILIPPINES SUPREME COURT REJECTS FUGITIVE SENATOR APPEAL

On May 20, 2026, the Philippines Supreme Court rejected a request from fugitive senator Ronald Dela Rosa to block an ICC arrest warrant. Dela Rosa is sought for crimes against humanity committed during the presidency of Rodrigo Duterte. Presidential spokesperson Claire Castro stated the warrant for the senator nicknamed “Bato” is valid. Although Dela Rosa claims the ICC warrant is illegal because the Philippines withdrew from the treaty in 2019, Solicitor General Darlene Berberabe stated that the withdrawal does not exempt the State from cooperating.

FRENCH PRESIDENT SUPPORTS REPEAL OF SLAVERY CODE NOIR

On May 21, 2026, President Emmanuel Macron supported the symbolic repeal of the “Code Noir” which consists of 17th and 18th century royal edicts organizing slavery. Macron called the maintenance of the text an offense to the Republic and asked the government to adopt the proposed law set for debate on May 28. Macron announced a collaboration with Ghana to provide recommendations but stated it is impossible to fully repair such a crime.

BELGIUM CONVICTED OF CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY FOR KIDNAPPING CHILDREN IN CONGO

On May 22, 2026, the Belgian Court of Cassation rejected an appeal by the State and finalized a conviction for the forced placement of mixed race children during the colonization of Congo. Lawyer Me Michèle Hirsch described this as the first conviction of a European State for a crime against humanity during colonization. The court confirmed that the systematic kidnapping of 5 girls based on their origin between 1945 and 1950 was an element of crime against humanity. Belgium was ordered to pay 50,000 euros in damages to each woman who was taken from her mother The government previously recognized the targeted segregation suffered by these children in 2019.

BNP PARIBAS APPEALS CONVICTION FOR COMPLICITY IN SUDAN MASS CRIMES

On May 22, 2026, the French bank BNP Paribas filed an appeal in a New York court against its October conviction for complicity in atrocities in Sudan. A jury previously found the bank complicit in crimes by the regime of Omar al-Bachir by funding the army and associated militias. A decision on the appeal is not expected before 2027.
