SUDAN

LEGAL ACTION FILED FOR UAE SANCTIONS

On May 11, 2026, a French law firm representing Sudanese victims sent an official request to European Union High Representative Kaja Kallas and the EU sanctions department. Attorney Sarah Sameur filed this request for immediate sanctions against 8 individuals and 4 companies for alleged support of the Rapid Support Forces. Targets include UAE Foreign Minister Abdallah ben Zayed Al Nahyane and UAE Vice President Mansour ben Zayed Al Nahyane. Victims are survivors of the October 2025 siege of El Fasher. General practitioner Mohamed Ismail Hassan and Sudanese investigator Mujahed Othman Abderrahim testified to the use of UAE supplied weapons and the recruitment of Colombian mercenaries. Investigations by the NGO The Sentry implicate Global Security Services Group owner Mohamed Hamdan Alzaabi and Prodigious Real Estate.

UN REPORTS 880 CIVILIAN DRONE DEATHS, RSF COMMANDER DEFECTED

On May 11, 2026, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk reported that drone strikes killed at least 880 civilians in Sudan between January and April 2026. These fatalities represent over 80% of total civilian deaths related to the conflict during this period. Hostilities involving drones have expanded toward Blue Nile, White Nile and Khartoum. On the same day, RSF Commander Ali Rizqallah, nicknamed “Savanna”, announced his defection.

ARMY DRONE STRIKE KILLS 6 IN DARFUR

On May 12, 2026, at least 6 people were killed in a drone attack in East Darfur. 5 others were injured and transported to El-Daein hospital. Local residents and an RSF led alliance identified the Sudanese army as responsible for the early morning strike on residential areas. The group Emergency Lawyers documented at least 36 deaths from drone strikes on civilian vehicles in the preceding 10 days. While the army declared reclaiming territory on a strategic road in Blue Nile, nearly 50,000 people fled that state between January and May 2026.

SYSTEMIC WAR RAPES & ABSENCE OF POLITICAL WILL TO END CONFLICT

On May 13, 2026, reports emerged of thousands of children born from systematic sexual violence committed primarily by the Rapid Support Forces. Survivors detailed assaults by RSF fighters and massacres of civilians and abduction into forced marriages. UN Special Rapporteur Reem Alsalem and Sudan Social Affairs Minister Souleima Ishaq al-Khalifa highlighted the double injustice, with social rejection and administrative barriers to birth certificates. UN Coordinator Denise Brown reported hundreds of pregnancies in Tawila following the October 2025 fall of El Fasher. Doctors Without Borders International President Javid Abdelmoneim condemned the global failure to end the Sudanese civil war or protect civilians. Returning from Darfur, Abdelmoneim reported total impunity and a lack of funding for humanitarian aid. CHAD

AIRSTRIKES KILL DOZENS OF FISHERMEN

On May 10, 2026, dozens of Nigerian fishermen were presumed dead following airstrikes by the Chadian army against jihadists on Lake Chad. These operations targeted Nigerien islands controlled by Boko Haram near the Chadian border. An anonymous member of an anti-jihadist self defense group reported that the strikes hit Shuwa Island, a Boko Haram bastion and fishing center. A Lake Chad fishermen union official estimated that 40 Nigerian fishermen are missing and likely drowned. Fishermen are reportedly forced to pay a tax to Boko Haram for access to these islands. The Chadian army was previously accused of killing dozens of fishermen in October 2024 on Tilma Island following an attack that killed 40 Chadian soldiers. The conflict has caused over 40,000 deaths and 2,000,000 displaced people.

BOKO HARAM JIHADISTS FLEE JOINT MILITARY OFFENSIVE

On May 12, 2026, Boko Haram jihadists reportedly fled their camps on Lake Chad following Chadian airstrikes supported by Nigeria and Niger. Since May 8, Chadian aircraft have targeted remote islands including Dogon Chukwu, Kangarwa, Gashakar, Yawan Mango and Kwatar Mota. Chadian soldiers also clashed with jihadists on Kaukeri Island. The military operations respond to recent attacks that killed 2 generals and 24 Chadian soldiers. An anonymous Nigerian intelligence source confirmed that Chad, Nigeria and Niger each provided 2 fighter jets for the coordinated mission. Fleeing fighters are now trapped near lake shores because they fear entering territory controlled by rival group ISWAP. Since 2009, this area has served as a jihadist bastion. The insurgency has killed thousands of people in northeast Nigeria before spreading to neighboring countries.

SOMALIA

PROTESTER KILLED IN MOGADISHU

On May 10, 2026, security forces killed 1 person and injured another while using live ammunition to disperse an anti-government protest in the Deyniile district of Mogadishu. Opposition figures organized rallies under the slogan “Dareen Hiil Shacab” to support people recently evicted from their homes. Witnesses reported that soldiers opened fire as participants fled. These political tensions escalate 5 days before the official end of the mandate of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Although the federal government organized regional elections in Southwest State, the process remains controversial due to the recent ousting of former regional leader Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen.

BURKINA FASO

JUNTA SUSPENDS 247 ASSOCIATIONS

On May 12, 2026, the Burkinabe junta suspended 247 associations for failing to renew their governing bodies. This measure brings the total number of organizations suspended or dissolved in less than 1 month to 929. These organizations operate in sectors including health, education, religion and women’s rights. The suspensions follow a July 2025 law promulgated by Captain Ibrahim Traoré to regulate NGOs and trade unions. Authorities claim the legislation aims to improve transparency and combat terrorism financing. In late April, Human Rights Watch stated that these laws allow the junta to intensify repression of civil society. International NGOs and associations frequently face accusations of espionage or collusion with jihadists.

NIGERIA

MILITARY AIRSTRIKE KILLS 13 CIVILIANS

On May 11, 2026, local sources confirmed that a Nigerian Air Force airstrike killed at least 13 civilians in Niger State. The previous day, a fighter jet hit residential houses in Kusasu village while striking “bandit” hideouts. Shiroro local government area Council Chairman Isyaku Bawa apologized to victims’ families for the unintentional incident. The Defense Headquarters stated that the strikes neutralized approximately 70 “bandits”. Military authorities ordered an investigation into allegations of civilian casualties. This event follows an April probe into a strike in Jilli that killed 56 people. Northern Nigeria faces insecurity from groups called “bandits” who conduct frequent village raids and mass kidnappings for ransom.

OVER 100 MASSACRED IN RAIDS

On May 11, 2026, reports indicated that the Nigerian army and criminal gangs killed over 100 civilians during one of the deadliest days of the conflict. On May 10, criminal groups named “bandits” ambushed travelers on the Magami, Dansadu road in Gusau, Zamfara State, according to security reports prepared for the United Nations. The raid killed 30 people including civilians, hunters and a community guard. Security forces killed several “bandits” after exchanging fire. In neighboring Katsina State, “bandits” murdered 12 people, the same day. Then, a military bombardment on Tumfa market in Zamfara State killed between 72 and 117 people. Amnesty International Nigeria branch reported at least 100 civilian deaths while resident cited 117 fatalities. Community leader Garba Ibrahim Mashema confirmed victims from Kwashabawa, Birane, Kware, Gangara and Manawa. Victims were taken to hospitals in Zurmi and Shinkafi. The army stated the operation targeted a secret meeting of terrorist commanders. Shiroro local government Council Chairman Isyaku Bawa apologized for the incident. President Bola Tinubu, who intends to run for a second term in January, declared a State of security emergency in November.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

COMMUNAL MILITIA MASSACRE KILLS 69

On May 9, 2026, reports confirmed that at least 69 people, mostly civilians, were killed during an attack by the Codeco militia in Ituri province. This massacre followed an April 28 offensive by the armed group Convention pour la révolution populaire (CRP) against the Congolese army positions near Pimbo in Djugu territory. Civil society leader Dieudonné Losa stated that 19 militiamen and soldiers were among the dead, while several bodies remained abandoned near Bassa village. The CRP was formed by Thomas Lubanga, a former warlord previously convicted for recruiting child soldiers. The Hema community representative group Ente qualifies the event as a massacre and urged against retaliation between the Hema and Lendu communities.

M23 REBELS WITHDRAW FROM STRATEGIC TOWNS

On May 11, 2026, the Rwanda backed M23 armed group withdrew from several localities in South Kivu. Administrative official Paul Fikiri Mudeda and army spokesperson Lieutenant Reagan Mbuyi confirmed that rebels left Sange, Kabunambo, Mutarule and Bwegera. These fighters returned to previous positions held before the December capture of Uvira. Local residents celebrated as pro government “wazalendo” militiamen entered the towns. Although M23 and Kinshasa agreed in Switzerland to facilitate humanitarian aid and release prisoners, conflict persists in eastern regions where M23 has seized vast territory since 2021.

CIVILIANS INJURED IN EASTERN DRONE STRIKE

Reports indicate that last week, a drone attack injured at least 25 civilians at a market in Mushaki. Victims, including a 2 year old girl, were treated at Ndosho hospital in Goma. Witnesses described the explosion that hit residential areas far from the front lines. The Congolese army recently acquired Turkish and Chinese attack drones to target M23 positions in the east. M23 also utilizes drones and recently targeted Kisangani airport.

EBOLA OUTBREAK DECLARED IN ITURI

On May 15, 2026, an Ebola outbreak was announced in Ituri province where laboratories confirmed related deaths have occurred. There are currently 246 suspected cases in the Mongwalu and Rwampara zones. Early laboratory tests analyzed in Kinshasa suggest an ebolavirus “non-Zaïre” strain, meaning current vaccines and treatments may not apply. Suspected cases are also pending in Bunia, a city of 300,000 residents. This event marks the 17th Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The last outbreak in August 2025 killed 34 people before being declared eradicated in December.

MALI

MALIAN ARMY LAUNCHES AIRSTRIKES ON KIDAL

On May 14, 2026, the Malian army conducted several airstrikes in Kidal against positions held by Touareg rebels and jihadists. During the night of May 13, 2026, at least 4 strikes hit the strategic northern city. An anonymous witness reported that 1 strike destroyed a house near a market while another created a crater in the courtyard of the Kidal governorate. An army officer at the Mopti command post announced that strikes would intensify. Kidal has been controlled by the Front for the Liberation of Azawad and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims since late April 2026. The armed groups seeks to conquer major northern cities in the territory they call Azawad.

JIHADIST BLOCKADE ON BAMAKO

On May 15, 2026, Amnesty International called on jihadists from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims to end the 2-week blockade of Bamako. Since April 30, 2026, insurgents have blocked essential road leading to the capital. Over 10 transport companies have suspended services to the capital. The current restrictions threaten food security and health for residents of Bamako.

LEBANON

9 KILLED IN ISRAELI STRIKES IN THE SOUTH, HEZBOLLAH HIT BACK

On May 9, 2026, Lebanese authorities announced the death of 9 people, including 1 girl, during Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon. Israeli warplanes targeted several areas including the city of Zrariyé, following evacuation orders for 9 localities. At Saksakiyé, the Lebanese Ministry of Health reported 7 deaths including 1 girl and 15 wounded including 3 children. In Nabatiyé, an Israeli drone attacked a motorcycle, killing a Syrian national and wounding seriously his 12 year old daughter. In Bedias, 1 person was killed and 13 others including 6 children and 2 women were injured. The Israeli army claimed it targeted terrorists and minimized civilian harm. 3 Israeli strikes also hit an area 20 km south of Beirut. Hezbollah declared it targeted a gathering of Israeli soldiers near Misgav Am with a drone in response to ceasefire violations. The Israeli army confirmed that several explosive drones fell in Israeli territory, resulting in the injury of 3 reservists. Hezbollah also launched missiles and drones against military targets inside Lebanon.

2 RESCUE WORKERS KILLED

On May 10, 2026, the Lebanese Ministry of Health announced that 2 rescue workers from the Islamic Health Committee were killed and 5 others were injured in Israeli strikes. Israeli forces targeted 2 sites belonging to the committee, which is linked to the Hezbollah, in Qalaouiyah and Tibnine. The National News Agency reported air strikes and artillery fire on more than 20 southern localities. According to the Ministry of Health, Israeli operations have caused 2,846 deaths since March 2, including 108 rescue workers. The Israeli army claimed it struck more than 20 infrastructures including command centers and weapon warehouses. These clashes occur despite the April 17 ceasefire.

ISRAELI SOLDIER JAILED FOR PROFANATION

On May 11, 2026, the Israeli army announced the imprisonment of a soldier who made a statue of the Virgin Mary smoke a cigarette in southern Lebanon. A second soldier who filmed the incident was also sentenced. The soldier who committed the act received 21 days in military prison while the one who filmed it received 14 days. This follows a previous incident on April 21 when a soldier was jailed for 1 month after vandalizing a statue of Jesus in the Maronite village of Debel.

MULTIPLE CIVILIAN CASUALTIES

On May 12, 2026, the Lebanese National News Agency announced that 6 people were killed in an Israeli air strike against a house in Kfar Dounine. The 7 injured individuals were transported to hospitals in Tyre. The Lebanese Ministry of Health and Civil Defense reported that 2 rescue workers died during an intervention in Nabatiyé. Another strike in Jebchit killed 4 people including a Syrian national and a soldier. In Bint Jbeil, 4 citizens including 1 woman and 1 child were killed. The Israeli army conducted operations in the Litani river area. US Department of State spokesperson declared peace depends on total Hezbollah disarmament.

HEZBOLLAH LEADER REJECTS DISARMAMENT

On May 12, 2026, Hezbollah leader Naïm Qassem stated that the group’s disarmament is not a subject for negotiations with Israel. In a message to his fighters, he affirmed that weapons and resistance are internal Lebanese matters. He declared the group would not surrender. These comments come as Lebanon and Israel prepare for a new session of negotiations in Washington on May 14.

5 CHILDREN AMONG 22 KILLED DURING INTENSIFIED ISRAELI STRIKES

On May 13, 2026, the Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that intensified Israeli strikes killed at least 22 people despite the ongoing truce. Striking over 30 locations, the Israeli army targeted 3 cars south of Beirut, killing 8 people including 2 children. 1 person was killed near Saïda and 3 others died in the Tyre region. In the evening, the ministry reported 10 more deaths, including 6 people in Arab Salim where 3 children and 2 women were killed. 1 child died in Harouf and 3 people including 2 children died in Roumin. 10,000 homes have been destroyed or damaged since April 17.

ISRAELI ARMY LAUNCHES NEW STRIKE WAVE AGAINST HEZBOLLAH

On May 14, 2026, the Israeli army announced a new series of strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon as negotiators prepare to meet in Washington. The military command called for the evacuation of residents in 10 southern Lebanese villages before the bombardments. Daily clashes have continued despite the ceasefire that began in mid April. These operations occur while representatives from Israel and Lebanon attempt to hold talks under United States mediation. The Israeli army maintains a yellow line 10 km from the border but conducted deep special operations beyond the demarcation. Lebanon requested United States pressure on Israel to stop strikes before negotiations.

SETTLERS WANT TO COLONIZE LEBANON

On May 14, 2026, families from the Uri Tzafon organization cofounded by biologist Anna Sloutskine expressed their desire to settle in southern Lebanon. The movement, which has 900 Telegram subscribers and 600 WhatsApp members, wants the Israeli border pushed to the Litani river. Member Ori Plasse, a seasonal agricultural worker, previously entered Lebanon illegally. While Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar claims no territorial aims, Anna Sloutskine believes colonization is essential for security. She has met with Environmental Protection Minister Idit Silman and claims some officials support the project.

HEZBOLLAH ATTACK WOUNDS ISRAELI CIVILIANS

On May 14, 2026, the Israeli army announced that an explosive drone launched by Hezbollah injured several civilians in northern Israel. On May 15, 2026, Israeli strikes targeted the Tyre sector in southern Lebanon following army calls to evacuate several villages. At least 2 strikes hit localities near the city. According to the National News Agency, an Israeli strike hit a center belonging to a local NGO located near a hospital in Tyre.

SYRIA

SYRIAN PRESIDENT AND LEBANESE PRIME MINISTER DISCUSS SECURITY

On May 9, 2026, Syrian President Ahmed al-Chareh received Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam in Damascus to discuss security and bilateral cooperation. The officials addressed economic and commercial cooperation as well as transport and energy sectors. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam stated they discussed efforts regarding Syrian detainees in Lebanon and the fate of missing or detained persons in both countries. They also focused on controlling the 330 km porous border to prevent smuggling activities. The Syrian authorities remain hostile to Hezbollah, which lost a major ally and supply route after the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.

AL-ASSAD COUSIN TRIED FOR CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY

On May 10, 2026, the Damascus criminal court presented charges of crimes against humanity against Atef Najib, who is the cousin of Bashar al-Assad and former head of political security in Deraa. Judge Kakhr al-Din al-Aryan described the trial as the first step to transitional justice in Syria. Atef Najib faces accusations for the systematic repression of peaceful protests in 2011, including murder, torture and arbitrary detentions. He is specifically prosecuted for torture leading to death in a political security detention center.

TURKISH SYRIAN BORDER CROSSING REOPENS AFTER 12 YEARS

On May 11, 2026, Turkish authorities announced the full reopening of a border crossing with Syria that had been closed since 2014. The crossing point links Akçakale in Turkey to Tal Abyad in northern Syria. Reopening for civil and commercial traffic follows the central Damascus government taking control of the area from Kurdish forces through an agreement signed in January. Turkish Ambassador to Damascus Nuh Yilmaz welcomed the normalization of the situation. Turkey currently maintains 6 land crossing points along the 900 km border.

FORMER SYRIAN AIR FORCE CHIEF ARRESTED FOR CHEMICAL ATTACK

On May 12, 2026, Syrian authorities announced the arrest of General Jayez Hamoud al-Moussa, who served as air force chief of staff under the regime of Bashar al-Assad. The Ministry of Interior stated that General Jayez Hamoud al-Moussa was responsible for repressing civilians and using chemical weapons. He served for 4 decades and coordinated with Russian forces during their 2015 intervention. General Jayez Hamoud al-Moussa had been under European Union sanctions since 2017. Following his retirement in 2016, he became governor of Hassaké. This follows the arrest of other former generals accused of a major 2013 chemical attack.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL DEMANDS WAR CRIMES PROBE INTO ISRAELI DESTRUCTIONS

On May 14, 2026, Amnesty International called for an investigation into potential war crimes committed by the Israeli army in southern Syria. The organization reported the deliberate destruction of civilian homes in the Quneitra governorate since the fall of Bashar al-Assad. Israeli troops entered 3 villages within the UN demilitarized zone on the Golan Heights after an Islamist coalition seized power in late 2024. Using satellite imagery, Amnesty International verified the damage or destruction of 23 buildings plus 2 houses and adjacent farmland in 2024 and 2025. Amnesty International Middle East and North Africa Deputy Director Kristine Beckerle stated there were no active hostilities during these destructions. She argued that border security cannot justify destroying homes in another country.

PALESTINE

ISRAELI AUTHORITIES EXPEL 2 FLOTILLA ACTIVISTS

On May 10, 2026, Israeli authorities announced the expulsion of 2 activists, Spanish national Saif Abukeshek and Brazilian national Thiago Ávila, following the interception of their “flotilla for Gaza”. The 2 men were arrested aboard a vessel intercepted by the Israeli navy in international waters on April 30. While 175 other militants from the Global Sumud flotilla were released in Greece, these 2 were taken to Israel for questioning. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs described them as professional troublemakers. Spain, Brazil and the United Nations had requested their release.

ISRAELI POLICE KILL A MAN IN QALANDIYA

On May 11, 2026, Israeli police killed 30 year old Ayman Rafiq Mohammad al-Hashlamoun in the Qalandiya refugee camp in the occupied West Bank. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, he was shot near the camp while Israeli police claimed they neutralized an assailant who opened fire with a firearm. Video footage showed soldiers moving a weapon away from the body. A Palestinian Red Crescent spokesperson stated that ambulances were blocked from the scene. During subsequent clashes, Israeli forces used tear gas and stun grenades and a teenager was injured by a rubber bullet. A raid on an UNRWA center resulted in several arrests and the suspension of classes.

LAND REGISTRATION USED TO EXPEL PALESTINIANS IN JERUSALEM

On May 11, 2026, a study by the NGO Bimkom revealed that Israeli land registration in East Jerusalem is being used as a bureaucratic tool to expel Palestinians. The procedure, relaunched in 2018, shows that 82% of the 2.3 square km registered so far has been recorded under the name of the Israeli State or the Jerusalem municipality. Bimkom architect Sari Kronish noted a lack of transparency in the process. Only 1% of the land was registered to Palestinian owners while 4% went to Jewish owners mostly linked to colonization. The NGO warned that these measures make it nearly impossible for Palestinians to prove property ownership.

EU SANCTIONS SETTLERS AND HAMAS OFFICIALS

On May 11, 2026, the European Union agreed to sanction extremist Israeli settlers and their organizations for violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. French Foreign Minister announced on social media that 7 settlers and organizations were targeted along with 12 Hamas officials. The agreement was reached after a change in the Hungarian government where Peter Magyar replaced Viktor Orban, ending months of vetoes. These sanctions involve assets freezes and travel bans. ISRAEL ESTABLISHES MILITARY COURT AUTHORIZED TO PRONOUNCE DEATH PENALTY

UNICEF REPORTS 70 PALESTINIAN CHILDREN KILLED IN WEST BANK

On May 12, 2026, UNICEF reported that 70 Palestinian children have been killed in the occupied West Bank since January 2025. SEXUAL VIOLENCE FROM BOTH HAMAS AND ISRAELI SECURITY FORCES

16-YEAR-OLD PALESTINIAN KILLED BY SETTLER IN JILJILYA

On May 13, 2026, the Palestinian Authority announced that 16-year-old Youssef Ali Kaabnah was killed by Israeli fire during a settler raid near Jiljilya.
